Shopping, Shopping, Shopping

We all heard the stories and other posts about Black Friday. I have succumbed to this ritualistic self inflicted pain for several years. Every year, Staples had something I just had to own (many items still boxed and in the drawer). I remember sitting or standing in line with hundreds of others in 30 degree weather just to get that door buster special. I even stooped to parking my kids in line telling them frostbite is good for you just so we could score 2 thumb drives. I was so sneaky!

This year I told the wife, I would not lower myself to that demeaning position in line right behind the family of eight who slept there over night and are wearing adult diapers so they dont have to leave the line. I would wait till Saturday and partake of what I titled it as 'serene' Saturday. We spent a few days at the cabin right across the river from Astoria, OR. Rumor has it, they built a new Costco and it's only a half hour to the outlet Malls were my wife assures me the deals will be great.

I chose to get the outlet mall thing out of the way. How many 50% off sales can there be. As I looked, that sweater was originally marked $75.00, wow what a bargain, only a few dollars more on sale than what we saw it for at that other store. Crowds didnt seem that bad here at the sale of the century. Maybe this will work out as I expected. We finished up and as usual, my wife walked away with several "good buys".

I'm getting hungry, so off to Costco. My neighbor told me he was headed there to 'graze' at the booths and told me of steak samples and the like that served up as full meals. He was excited that he could head over and just walk around eating. He did tell me hoped there would be a few more drinks available to wash down all that food.

When we arrived, the parking lot was huge, so huge, it seemed it was only about half full. We parked and walked past several people with 50" tv's on them and others with carts so full, they had trouble pushing them.

As I entered the massive fresh smelling store, I stopped dead in my tracks and realized why the outlet stores were so empty. This place was packed. I had three 'incidents' just entering the store. One lady rushed in front of me to get a cart 2.3 seconds faster and I was already loosing my serenity. As I made it past the hoards of tv shoppers and several just watching football, I managed to get to the jewelry counter where the wife ran full speed to. She already had a pair of earrings picked out. The wait was on to get someone to open the door to look at them. Shopping cart rage was setting in. As we headed through the store, it was worse than a New York traffic jamb. There were crowds of 50 to 100 people around the hand out vendors. I could'nt even get close enough to smell what they were offering. Soon dismay gave way to rage and I escorted my wife to the checkout. We stopped and bought a hot dog on the way out and went back to the cabin. I am a true believer now of Cyber Monday

Happy holidays everyone

Daydreaming

It seems most of the country is under water right now. Here in the pacific NW, we are bracing for our fourth storm this week. The generator has had good use and I am glad to announce if our Mountaineer was going to leak, it would have. As I look across the hall here at work ( I dont have a window) I see dark grey skies with heavy rain. Oh and the wind is coming up. Here on the coast, it has been brutal. I work for awhile and then break out the map programs. I plot vacations to warm dry climates and then reality sets in that summer is so far away. If I could escape this area right now, I would. I long to sit under the awning and complain a little how hot it is outside today...Ahhh, those are the days...

I dont read this site much this time of the year. It is way to painful to hear campers talk of moving to an area where the temps are a little under 80 this time of year, or those of you who plan your picnics in Florida...you are just to cruel...

The phone is ringing and time to check in with reality! Going to get the raincoat and boots. 3 to 5 inches of rain tonight which is actually a bit less than the last storm...God I need a vacation.

Rain, Wind, and a rockin Trailer!

Lori and I decided to head out for the weekend and just get away from it all. Our quick escape to Ocean Mist is only 40 minutes away, but far enough to feel like we are out on an adventure.

It's friday and the trailer is loaded and waiting for Lori to get home from work. I was watching the weather forecasts and it called for heavy rain and high wind to move in by 5 pm or so. It was a little after two and I was getting antsy to get out there and set up before we got soaked. After all, should it start to rain and blow, I didnt want Lori getting soaked having to do all the set up in that weather!!!

We were loaded, hitched and ready to move by 3pm. We were off and of course, had to make that first stop at Starbucks for coffee. Now it was going to be alright. Soon we were at the RV park and given the good news that we had been assigned the only pull through site. It is fairly easy to get in the others, but may be helpful with the weather. We pulled in and found this lot was level side to side and not as much of a drop front to back. Nice spot and you could really hear the ocean pounding as we set up. It was windy, but still no rain.

Soon we were inside and I had set up the satellite dish. Oh no, I forgot which antenna dish to pick from the menu. Was it number 12 on the list? No that didnt work...After several tries and no luck, I remembered I had the information in an earlier blog. No one to call or help out. Finally, One hour and Forty minutes later, Mark logged in and went to the blog. We found it was number 6, and I decided I needed to write it down and leave it in the trailer. Just about this time, the rains picked up and we knew we were in for a fun night of weather watching.

As the evening wore on, it seemed as though the heavens were looking to set records for rain fall. I carefully checked out the trailer to make sure we were not leaking. Everything was good to go an dry. I really appreciate the max air covers in this weather, I had two vents open and no leaks. Several times a high gust would hit the trailer and shake us a bit. I felt it was pretty secure and solid with the JT's outside, but what I didnt count on was the movement once we went to bed. As I layed in bed, I looked out the bedroom window next to me and could hardly see across the park. It was awsome to watch the power of nature. However, remember all those tales of issues with heights etc, we would shake and have some noise up top that was unsettling for me. I knew it would be a long night.

Right before bed time, I had the dubious duty of walking the Walt! Lori gave me some crap about not wanting to get soaked and not her job etc. I donned the rain coat, hat and opened the door. Walt went out with not problem and decided it was time to explore. It was raining and blowing so hard, my pants were soaked immediately and I had to hold my hat on. I finally convinced Walt it was time to go in and the two drowned rats went inside. Even with being dried off, Walt layed and shivered on his bed. Lori took a towel and covered him. He was snoring in minutes.

Saturday brought a glorious morning with warm sun and calm wind. We had a good breakfast and walked down to the office to check in as they close early in the winter. We got back and went for a coffee in town. I walked back to the truck and Lori looked at me stranger than normal and got in wondering what I was up to. I drove down to the beach and we sat, enjoying the sun and drinking coffee. We watched two spaniels playing on the beach and then one of them turned, lunged and a shorebird gumming it up pretty good before the owner got her dogs away. Interesting how it all went down. We headed for the casino and donated some money. We decided to eat lunch and although good, both of us got sour belly soon after and suffered most of the evening.

As the Halloween night came upon us, it started to get a little foggy around the edges, and then an almost full moon rose out of the east. Lori was sitting at the table when Walt and I went outside. I snuck around the corner and tapped my fingers on her window. She jumped almost hitting the ceiling, screamed and called me several vulger names. It was then she spent an extended amount of time in the bathroom. He he...I love Halloween.

Sunday we both felt better and after breakfast, I cleaned all the tanks a little extra as this was the time of year to winterize. I drained water lines and soon we were headed home. I backed in on the first try with a little correction but when it came time to back into the parking spot, Lori felt I was too far over, so I tried again and after at least 8 tries, was finally parked. As usual, we enjoyed our time "roughing it" nad hope to get in at least a couple trips this winter.

Sand, food and Fun

After a whirwind and taxing two weeks, I was looking forward to some quad riding and fun in the sand. This is an annual trip with the family and includes pulling the 5vr to Sand Lake with Shawn hauling the bikes down. It is somewhat challenging as we have no hookups there and tight quarters with that many people.

Lori and I headed out early Thursday afternoon. Mark pulled in from Cheney in time to catch a ride south. We made good time and wanted to stop for dinner in Astoria when our first challenge of the weekend hit. Walt and I took a quick walk as Lori and Mark ordered Pizza. As we rounded the back of the trailer, I always check everything to make sure we are ok. Walt and I noticed something wrong with the left rear trailer tire. Oh crap, some rivet or stud in the corner. At least I was in a parking lot, so changing the tire should not be a problem. I looked at the time and hit tire shops on the GPS. There was an open tire shop less than a mile away. I called and they had a tire in stock. I pulled in and of course as luck would have it, the rivet was in the corner, so it could'nt be fixed. $145.00 later, we were on the road and headed south. We found our spot, loaded water and were were soon tucked in and getting ready for bed. Shawn and Don arrived with Chad around 11 or so. We settled in and dreamt of sand adventures to come.

I was apprehensive with what we had just done with the bikes. I was second guessing myself over the decision to trade in the Goldwing for the 550 Yamaha. Would the ride be enough of an improvement to make it worth what I had done? Would I look down at the 550 because of what I had done? I just told myself, this was a positive move and we can always get another Wing if we decide this was not for us.

Friday morning was crisp but clear and perfect for riding. As we looked around, we were almost the only ones out there. This is what its all about. I managed to talk Lori into allowing me to ride the 550 first. She reluctantly allowed this and off I went.

As soon as we hit the sand, I knew this was the right bike. It had lots of power and a very smooth ride. The throttle response was very positive and I was livin large. It was a little hard getting used to the suspension as it rolled side to side absorbing the shock. I was ready for the ultimate test...the trails. This would be the test to make or break. I headed off into the trails on the east side and soon was floating through the turns, hills and whoops. As I rounded one set of turns, I banked right, sand filled grin on my face and oops!!!, this quad is a little wider than the 450 and I had just put the first mark on the plastic. I went into a narrow trail, realized it and stopped. I slid sideways and hit a small tree. I hit a second as I backed out. Oh well, now it looks ridden.

I returned to the camp and Lori was patiently waiting. She had her helmet on, waiting...rumor has it a couple stopped by and gave her a dollar...something about Lori and Helmets. I jumped on the 450 and we backed out. Still apprehensive Lori pulls out with stern instructions to stay on the level and let her get used to riding a quad. We headed out, turned west and worked our way toward the ocean. As we continued, a smile broke across her face and the speed increased. We rode for about 45 minutes and upon our return, she declared it was fun and not what she thought it would be. I was happy as the bike was a hit and Lori was having fun.

I hung with Lori, Walt and Chad off and on all day. Late in the afternoon, Chad, Lori and I took Walt for a walk and boy did he enjoy his time with Walt. We ate way too much for dinner and it was time for the obligatory sunset ride. Off Lori and went with Mark in tow. We headed up the hill and watched the sun go down over horizon. Friday was a hit. Later in the evening, Jennifer, Peyton and Eric, Jenn's brother were at the sand and as is the Fretts' tradition, settled most of the worlds problems around the campfire. It was cold this evening, but clear. We were asleep as soon as we layed down. Life is good!

Saturday, Lori went for a ride and then got the twitch to head south for shopping. Soon, she and Mark headed out. This meant, I had the 550 all to my self. Peyton and I hit the sand and both enjoyed the ride. I did notice that his quad was heating up at times and would start to smoke. We shut it off and it did better.

That evening, Peyton wanted to go up to the sunset and we headed out. Lori and Mark got back and Lori stayed behind. I do remember at some point, we were riding around and I saw a truck I felt looked like Shawn's. It was Shawn with Chad in the child seat with an ear to ear grin. They were out 4 bying and he loved it. Sorry, got off topic a little, as Peyton and I headed up the hill, his bike started to loose power and smoke. Don was with us and all of the sudden, it seized. Something major went wrong and his quad was toast. Mark was in the area on Shawns quad and went to get Shawn. Soon, here comes Shawn, Jenn and Chad to the rescue. They load the broke bike up on the truck and off we go. Peyton rode back with me. Peyton was sad, but a real trooper and understood what had happened.

Lori and I went out Sunday morning for a last ride. It was great to have her out riding and enjoying the sights. I was having a great time and things were going as well as we could expect. I went back to camp and grabbed Peyton and headed out. I took him on some lower trails and climbed some small hills. I laughed as he never quit talking the whole ride. What a trooper.

We got back to camp and reluctantly packed up for the trip home. It was a great weekend and I think everyone had a great time. A couple hours of cleanup and unloading gave way to Lori and I resting in the comfort of our recliners catching up on tv shows we recorded earlier.

I feel better now knowing two things were accomplished. A smoother ride allowed me more time riding and the enjoyment Lori and the others had eating sand makes you feel real good. It did me.

A quick Detour to OUr Cabin

Still in the learning stage, I wanted to find a quiet and secluded area to help Lori get more riding time on the new ATV. We had discussed how we have not been to the cabin in such a long time. We loaded the Quad and riding lawn mower in the trailer and headed south for the weekend. Lori had called her folks and invited them down for a later summer get away. Not much argument there and the best part was Frank, their dog got to go too.

Friday night, we vegged and didn't accomplish much. In the morning, we went to breakfast and soon headed back to the beach. Roy and Opal arrived and soon plans for a Costco run were being made. I chose to stay behind and get the lawn mowed. I was able to cut it a little wider as I try to do and everything looked nice again. I unloaded the quad and had it at the ready when the shoppers returned.

Last spring, Shawn told me how a tree had come down and he cut enough to get down the drive. I looked at it and could see alot of firewood in the alder. This would not be a simple task as the tree was still partially suspended on another one and the brush was very heavy. I did not want to be under the tree or close as I went to cut it as I didn't want the tree to snap.

After a couple of hours, I had cut out three smaller trees, and then cut the brush back. Now I could escape if the tree split. Glad I did. As soon as I started to cut, it popped and split. I got out of the way and was able to clear it safely. I sawed the tree into sections, but they were heavy and I needed a way to get them down or at least to a place I could cut them out. Enter the 550 Yamaha. Lori picked up a couple tow straps for me and after a couple quick lessons, Roy was now enjoying the quad and seemed to be at ease with all it had to offer. He would come down the drive, spread the strap and we would load brush on the strap, hook it and off he would go. It worked very well for towing large amounts of brush. Then we were ready for the logs. He backed up to the edge and I hooked the straps to the three lengths. I dropped it in 4wd and started out. It towed without hesitation and now the trees were at the shed and ready to be sawed up. Both Roy and Lori rode the quad for quite some time that afternoon and Roy could be heard weighing options about what he could use one for at home.

We had a very relaxing time and it was great to be back at the beach. We need to spend more time there.

Times, they are a changin!!!

After we got back from vacation, I have been tormented with what to do. I had ridden just three times in the past 1.5 years. Although I enjoy it, my back hurts every time I get on. I recall our 2008 vacation on the bike. We were bored with our travels and looked to spend less time on the road and more time in one place ( not a full week though!). I labored with the thought of selling the bike as we were not into riding anymore. Vacation 2008 was ok at best and we have to admit, we are spoiled with our 5vr. I dont know why, but it always seems to work out with things like this. As Lori and I weighed our options and talked about our future, I sat down and a tv show would make the decision for me. I am an avid ATV rider as well as road bikes. I love the woods and sand. I record a couple ATV shows every week and sit and enjoy them in the evening. This week, they tested out a brand new 550 class ATV with power steering and fuel injection. I had longed for a mid range ATV with not onle the above options, but independant suspension which should make for a much softer ride.

I showed the segment to Lori and you could see it in her eyes. She had a possible outlet for the outdoors. I told her I wanted to trade in the 450 or sell it as I had a couple buyers. She nixed that and we started to talk about selling the wing. I spoke to some people I know in the industry and all seemed to think Goldwing sales were still strong. Well, withing three days, a dealership made me an offer, I could not look down at. Almost retail book for the 1800, a great price on this atv along with freebe's and a check for the diffreence. It was a win win as far as this deal was concerned. I rode the wing down to the dealership. By Elma, I was hurting and the ride no longer enjoyable. By the time I got back home, I was miserable and the decision was made for me. Get the value now and reassess getting another wing whn and if I can get my back fixed.

Lori and I were now the proud owners of a new Yamaha 550 with power steering. I gently showed Lori how everything worked and she eventually asked if she could ride it. After a few starts an stops, she was hooked and I couldnt get her off the bike. She rode loops down and around the back yard, down the drive and anywhere she could ride. She wants to take the atv class and with us still owning the 450, we can go ride together. The real test will be Shawns birthday in a couple weeks. We all head to Sand Lake and Lori has her helmet and is ready to eat some sand!

Vacation in theNorthwest

Lori, Walt and I are packed and as soon as Lori gets home, we are off to Burlington and then onto Blaine for a slow paced and relaxing week long vacation. The plan is to stay at the Burlington KOA tonight, sat and sun, then after a stop at camping world to install a couple vent covers, we are off to Blaine and the K & M campground there.

One plan was to get a certificate of health for Walt, so he could go to Canada on some day trips. We took him to the vet and they found an infection in his eye, did a complete physical and sent him home with meds. A whoping $300.00 later, he is in good health and can go with us. Had I known he was going to cost that much, he could have slept in the trailer while we enjoyed Canada!

Speaking of Walt, the vet put him on some joint pain meds to make him get around better. Liked him better when he layed around and was cudly...now he is full of you know what and is all over the place. Today, I put him in the truck as I always do when I hitch up as he was running around all psycho. He refused to get out, is ready to go camping and has been in the back seat for over an hour...Anyway, more from the road!

Oh, One last thing before we head out. A couple weeks ago, Lori got a new GPS for her car. Last night she informs me we will be using her GPS as it is much better and is more updated...Who'd ever thunk...GPS envy!!!

Well, we hit the road at about 2:20 pm, a personal best for us. We hoped to get through traffic and be set up no later than 7pm. Well, that didnt happen. As we hit Ft Lewis, traffic slowed to a crawl and stayed that way. We decided to stop at Applebys in Tacoma hoping the traffic would lighten up. We feasted on the two for twenty special which I had the buffalo wings and ribletts. This would later become a serious issue with me. I rarely eat stuff with all this sauce...I was hungry and it looked good. We made it back on the freeway and I can point out every piece of roadway through Tacoma as I had plenty of time to study it. We got back up to about 45 mph in Federal Way and then more slow downs as we inched our way through Seattle and north.

As we cleared North Seattle my worst fears began to materialize...I needed to use the restroom and there was no way to even get off the freeway(remember the ribs and buffalo wings?) Things went south very fast if you know what I mean? I wont bother you with the details but thank god I finally spotted a rest area.

At a whopping 8:40, we are in camp and set up. I am exhausted from the trip and soon we had the satellite set up and TV was on. This KOA is packed tonight and there are people everywhere, but it is quiet. All are minding themselves.

Saturday morning was too early and we vegged all morning. After breakfast, we headed for the pool and hot tub. After Hiding in the shower room till I made sure Greenpeace was no where around, I went for it and hit the pool. It was a very nice and warm pool as was the hot tub. Ahhh, we are finally on vacation.

We headed to La Conner for lunch. After walking around a bit, we found a nice cafe that is on the dock over looking the waterway. We dined on fish and chips as the boats slid by and were even entertained by a seal in the river feasting as we were. After checking out the shops, we loaded up. I wanted to check the Potlatch resort, an RV park in town. Reports were not favorable but after driving through, I felt this park was very suitable for those spending time in La Conner. The sights are narrow, but well maintained and nice level pads.

We then headed for Anacortes. I wanted to look at the Fidalgo Bay RV resort. It is located on a beautiful spit on the water overlooking Fidalgo bay. As we drove in, there is a section to the left and another down a road. This first section was dry, unkempt and not very inviting. Units seemed packed in like sardines. Not my idea of a place to camp. I guess if you were there to fish and not spend alot of time in camp, it would work fine. The other section however was very nice with wide sites and million dollar views. We would definitely spend time here.

We worked our way into Anacortes and what do you know, a Starbucks! Time for a fix and then drove around the back side of the bay which narrows down into Deception Pass which was spectacular. Back at camp, we watched the Seahawk game (cost of new satellite dome down to about $80.00 per viewing hour now) and another tactical mistake...Nachos for dinner! Thank god we have the extra strength Tums with us. Oh ya, she also cooked up some asparages for me...my gut, my a*&#. After dinner, we walked and as we went past the community campfire, some folks who have taken a liking to Walter invited us to stay. We talked till late and had a great time.

This morning we awoke to a brisk but clear morning. Coffee and a walk with Walter was the highlight. We are taking it easy today with Outlet mall shopping and Starbucks. Tommorrow, we pack up and head to Blaine with a stop at Camping World to have some vent covers put on. Sounds like this will be a timely addition as they are calling for rain later this week. More on vacation 2009 later.

After a disappointing trip to the Burlington outlet stores (not too many stores that Lori likes) but she did find some clothes. We headed to Red Robin and had a good lunch. Seems food is the highlights most of the time. We headed back and hung out the rest of the night. Parks has cleared out for now, but they said it promises to be busy on Labor Day.

Monday morning was our appointment at Camping world to have vent covers put on. As we talked to the service rep, she learned of our destination of Beachwood. She told us how no sites are reserved and there are several sections (a though G) to choose from. She strongly advised us to head to section G which we did when we arrived. What a huge resort. The pool area hosts three pools, two outdoor hot tubs and one inside tub. A workout area and lots to keep one busy. we were worn out as when we left Camping world, I decided to go off the beaten path and travel up WA 11 towards Bellingham. What a beautiful but treacherous drive with a trailer. The roads were narrow and up and down as you hugged the coast literally on the edge. we finally made it to the RV park and as we turned into section G, which is secluded from the rest, we really liked the sites. We had a few to choose from and picked an end site. Very nice neighbors and lots to watch and enjoy. The pool area was quite a ways away and it required a trip in the truck when cool outside. A day to rest up and check out Birch bay and then it was off to BC. Next, our trip north...

That night, I went to set the GPS for our trip. I soon learned that there was no Canada map loaded. Appearently, a little known secret is all the Garmin Gps units which end in 00, only have the bottom 48 states. I was off to the parking lot where I could get Wi Fi and a short two hours later, I had the updated maps loaded on the computer, but would not load in the Garmin. I was frustrated and went back to the trailer. The next morning, I called tech support and found out the 'trick' to getting the map loaded.

After a good breakfast, we locked in the GPS and were off (around 11 am) to Whistler. Within minutes we were at the border and when asked where we were headed, the borader agent gave us an alternate route to get through the Vancouver traffic...Ya, right. Was it the first left and off the round about? No, take the second left and the first exit out of the...oh crap, we're lost again. We were on the shoreline and headed in the right directiion, but not even close to the route we needed. I soon was able to get back on track and we headed up the bay towards Whistler. What a beautiful drive. There was construction 75 % of the way as they were trying o get ready for the 2010 Olympics. We saw several venue's and when we arrived at Whistler, all I could say was WOW! The place is huge and people everywhere. We parked and walked around the interior area with all the shops and places to eat. It was fun sitting in a curb side cafe watching all the people. I believe most countries and races were represented here. What a diverse area.

After a great lunch, Lori and I walked up to the lift area and could see alot of mountain bikers coming down the hill. It looked like some sort of competition, but I am not sure.

As the day turned to evening, it was time to head home. Easier said than done. We got caught in traffic and construction heading down the hill, but made it to west Vancouver just in time for ridlock. It was no faster than 10 mph for several miles. When we finally made it to our exit, I swore I would never come back to Vancouver. We made it over the border and by the way, not a question about Walt (good use of $330.00) and we were at a pizza place. We took it to the trailer and settled in for some tv. A long but enjoyable day.

Next, it was back over the border, but on the east side of Vancouver for wine tasting. We mapped out several locations, found a couple, saw a couple that were closed and made it to an old Fort town northeast of Vancouver. We ate lunch at a small coffee shop and I as well as Lori felt this was one of the best Lattes we have had. we walked the town and soon realized it was a major tourist trap with little to hold our interest. We packed up and headed south. As we approached a busy intersection, I could see a car ahead stop abruptly as it turned left. The car stayed there and it appeared it was disabled. As we neared the intersection, I was able to see what happened. A scooter was down as was the rider. The female driver was out of her car and both she and the downed rider were on their cell phones...strange.

As our week neared the end, I felt we had a great time, but I am not used to this type of vacation. I like to spend a couple days here and there, moving to a new spot and seeing more stuff. We enjoyed our time at Beachwood, but I felt somewhat unfullfilled. We have some fine tuning to do on this RV thing.

As the summer is winding down, we reflect on our travels and our accomplishments. I love RV travel, but feel guilty with the bike sitting in the garage and the grass grows taller at our neglected beach property. With our schedules, something has to give...but what would it be?

Land Sharks and Sand

Last weekend, we traveled to Silver Cove RV park near Castle Rock, WA. We met up with Gwen and Loren for a weekend of relaxation and...well...thats about all we had planned. The Falls were a little nervous as they were bringing their new pup along and well, lets just say, he has a few social problems. You see, Cooper is adopted and has had a rough short life. He is a Pug, Chihuahua mix. If you are trying to visualize, think of Loren very anorexic. Anyway, Cooper is a little stand offish when he is around you for the first time. I was introduced to Cooper shortly after we arrived and he soon earned his nickname of land shark. Cooper is a little uppity and likes to growl while showing his teeth. After a short time (Almost two days!) Cooper settled down and when given a treat by Lori, soon was her best bud. He never warmed up to a bored and un impressed Walter which seemed to make Cooper even more ill tempered. Kind of reminds me of Loren when dinner is late!

Saturday morning, Lori and I went for coffee, returned and sat around watching tv, napping and walking this huge and beautiful park. We watched boaters come and go, fish jump and in general had a great time. I can easily see why the Falls love this place.

Saturday night, we grilled hamburgers while the Falls provided their special corn on the cob. It was great and we sat around enjoying the fire at night watching Loren constantly moving wood around trying to put the fire out every minute of so. We had a great time.

Sunday, my plan was to head through Portland, hit hiway 26 and later onto Oregon 6 into Tillimook and onto Sand Lake to meet Shawn and Neal for some quad riding on the sand. All was going well until I went to take the exit off I-5 to Hiway 26. Exit was closed and no detour. Thankfully Rosie routed me over Cornelious pass and then back to my original route.

Soon I was on my quad and hitting the sand. We rode all afternoon and rode with several of Shawns friends who came down for the day. We all decided to take the 'one way' which is a trail on the north end and is supposed to be a one way trail. About three quarters of the way in, the first guy did a loop and when he exited, Shawn was just entering and they collided. Both were thrown off their bikes and suffered minor injuries. The bikes were not so lucky. Shawns bike was broke and we had to put the front on the back of my quad and tie it down. I then acted as a tow truck and towed it all the way back to camp.

we licked our wounds and made dinner. Neal and I went back out riding for a sunset cruise. We ride up to a bluff over looking the Pacific Ocean and watch a spectacular sunset. It is very romantic...er I mean we high fived and rode off into the sunset...

Monday morning brought a very sore and slow moving Shawn. He slpt good during the night, but was in need of Advil real bad. I made omelets and Neal and I went back out for a couple hours as Shawn slept some more. We packed up and headed for home about 1130. We made great time till we hit Seaside. From there it was one construction project after another and we crept along and breakneck speeds of 5mph for miles. After 4 1/2 hours, I was home and another adventure had ended. On a side note, Shawn is much better and moving more every day.

Back to the Beach

It's 1200 and the trailer is loaded. We are off to a relaxing, but maybe wet weekend at Ocean Mist RV park. It's only been a couple weeks since we were on the road, but I need to get away. Work is staggering again and help is finally here. I have a new partner and thee load will ease from here. With that, gives me the ability to escape beyond the confines of this county. We will be on the road this weekend, next weekend with Gwen and Loren (he always gives me much to write about...you know the kind...black cloud over head) in Castle rock. Then we are off to the Northwest corner for vacation near the end of the month. Grandma and grandpa Munson should be here soon, so off to finish loading and then the grueling 35 minute drive to the park!

We arrived at the park around 4 or so. It was packed but there were a couple spots open by the ocean side. We were lucky enough to get a spot right next to the one we occupied a few weeks earlier. Soon we were hooked up and the grill was going with chicken. We had apple salad, Taco salad and chicken for dinner and sat around picking our teeth for hours. We do eat well while traveling! I set up the satellite for TV and we sat and relaxed over fresh baked cinnamon rolls.

Saturday we goofed off and went to the Casino in the afternoon. Mild temps and no wind made for a great day at the beach. When we got back, the mist was moving in as I heated up the barbecue. Tonight was Halibut for the guys and Grandma Munson got to sample some chicken Kabobs and Corn on the cob. Wow, what a feast. We walked around later to work off some of the dinner.

About 3:30 in the morning, I awoke to clanking and movement in the trailer. After realizing it was'nt the in laws in the bedroom, I got up to investigate. I looked outside and noticed the wind had come up and the awning was moving around pretty good. I decided to go out and close it up. As I wound it up, I could hear others doing the same thing in the dark. Oh Well, we are camping after all.

Sunday was warm and some sun. As we broke camp, the weather continued to improve, but we knew it was not going to last. What a nice weekend and now to go back on the diet. As we headed east, I noticed there seemed to be a mass exodus from the beach. Traffic was heavy and lots of RV's were on the road. We topped off the weekend with a stop at Starbucks for a nice cup of joe. I could get used to being on the road. Side note: Walt got lots of attention and walks. We had to check him a couple times to make sire he was just sleeping sound and not dead. That was one tired puppy.

Rubbing Elbows with the Upper Crust

I try to be an optimist as much as possible, however this weekend, I went into it with a somewhat 'poor' attitude. I only went as we got to see Mark and his new friend(not sure if I can call her his girlfriend yet). So off to Bellevue and a visit with the privileged...?

The day started off great. I took the day off in order to travel during that brief lull in heavy traffic. Phone rings at 0600 and off to work I go for 8 hours of stuff. Get home and finally on the road at about 2:30. Yes, this put us smack in the middle of Fort Lewis traffic which gave us the opportunity to look over the side of the roads very close as we traveled at a robust 5 mph for about ten miles. Eventually we got back up to speed and although heavy traffic, we made pretty good time.

Rosie(GPS) got us off the freeway and to the RV park with no problems. As I turn in, I see a very narrow main road in. The park was clean, but damn, how do I get this rig parked? We check in and they point out a site just off the main building. I thought as I looked that this was not going to be fun. The staff is required to assist in parking as they stack us in like sardines!

After three tries, I get into the spot and realize this is not your typical RV site. I have less than 2 inches clearence in back and the slide outs are right on the line. As I look around, the RV dump for the site to the other side is right at our door. Hope those people lay off the spicy foods or we are in for a fun weekend. After I unhook, I have to park the truck next to the trailer. I have to get so close that I cannot even sit in lawn chairs. It is miserable and we are unable to even move. Walt is being wierd because he likes to be on the long leash and sit and be a people watcher. Cant see around the truck here. My day is going great.

Lori and I ordered Pizza as it was too hot to cook and couldn't get the barbecue out. Soon we had changed into our bathing suits and we were off to the pool and hot tub. Very nice facility and very clean. That made up for alot. Later that evening, I was looking and tried to imagine how I would pull out and leave the park. Pretty tight turn.

About 1030, Mark and his friend arrived. We sat and talked until I couldnt keep my eyes open anymore. Lori and I always sleep good on the road and I am pretty sure you could have lit off a bomb adn I would have slept through it.

Saturday morning, we enjoyed a great breakfast from Lori and sat and BS'd for awhile. Soon, they were off to get ready for the wedding. Lori and I went and found a car wash to clean and vacuum out the truck. She also needed to find a hair clip for her ensemble and of course, we needed coffee. As Rosie guided us into the car wash, across the street was Starbucks. Two buildings down from there was a place for her clip. That was a good call.

It is 3:30 and we are off to attend the wedding. It is at a country club and promises to be a beautiful setting. We drove to the Hilton to get Marks friends and shuttle them to the site. As we arrived at the front gate, we were allowed to continue to the wedding. What a beautiful park like setting. It was so green and lush. This isnt so bad after all I thought. We went inside and were seated. Chairs were not designed for us 'medium husky' types. I was almost a full butt cheek off the chair!

A soon as the ceremony was over, we were ushered out to the deck overlooking the greens and first tee. As I waded through a couple hundred people, I now learned the line for drinks was inside on the opposite end. I was no again irritated as I worked my way to a 50 person deep line. All I wanted was a diet Coke! As the line see, emed to get longer and larger in the middle, I soon realized many people 'seeded the line' and as the person got close, the whole party either arrived to collect drinks or we had to wait till they were located. Now I was mad. It was hot and I was no where near my damn diet coke..also getting cranky as I am hungry and I forgot all my meds back at the trailer.

As I got about two thirds of the way through the line, I looked back and could see almost everbody in line had a drink and was headed for seconds. Soon, waitress' could be seen taking orders from those behind a select few of us slogging through the line as time passed us by. I am now officially pissed. When I finally got to the bar, I ordered two Diet Cokes as I would not endure that indignity again. I have morals, I have pride...It was now time to sit at our assigned tables. After much confusion, we learned that we had to go to a table, find our name and open the tent thing to get the table assignment. Wow, at least we were both at the same table! We went there and after introductions, found we had been placed at a table in the back corner, by the kitchen with future co workers of the bride! Very nice people and they made us feel at home, but what the ^%@*??? We had a great dinner and the reception went well. I could tell my blood sugar was getting out of whack, so we headed back. A very interesting afternoon.

I forgot to mention that just before we left, the Clampets pulled in on the other side of the trailer. They were in a very large older motor home which stuck out into the drive a couple feet. I could not believe it. How was I going to get out. I didnt worry about it and left. They family retrieved a picnic table and set it up in our site on the other side using our bedroom slide for shade. I forgot to close the dinning room window and were greeted with a blue haze after they polished off a couple cases of cigarettes under our window. Oh, I love camping!!!

We were up and out by ten the next morning. After being guided past the 'home' I had almost an inch of clearance and was able to get out of the park. We had a nice uneventful trip home and logged this rv park into the do not return file.

Off to the Banana belt for the 4th

Sequim is a unique area in western WA. It is in whats called a rain shadow of the Olympic mountains and does not receive much rain throughout the year. After joining K&M we wanted to get out somewhere and relax for the weekend. After checking the resorts, we felt Diamond Point in Sequim would be just the place.

I got off work an hour early and it only took a few minutes to hook up and get on the road to 'beat the traffic'. As we headed east, the westbound traffic was very heavy and we thought this may have been a great idea to head north. As we rumbled up US 101 through Shelton and then along side Hood Canal, it became apparent that very few were on this road today. We made good time and soon were pulling into Diamond Point RV resort.

The park is layed out kind of different. The center is the entrance drive, you then can take a loop to the right or two roads to the left. We were on the loop and found our spott tucked up against the hillside. It was warm outside, but the afternoon sun was nicely shaded by the trees. A easy back in and set up. I was excited to get the new Winegard carry out set up and grabbed it and soon figured out where south was. I set it up and within minutes, the tv was on and Two and a Half Men were on. Life was now good, Lori was cooking dinner and I could relax and watch TV. A few moments later 'Pop' and we lost all 120 volt power. I had the air conditioner on and forgot to turn it off to use the microwave. We were on a 30 amp box, which should be fine for most appliances, but you have to be carful with the microwave.

I reset it and soon everything was coming back up. What's this, no satellite signal, out to check and reset, I could hear it, but whats wrong? I went in and went through the set up again. Crap, what is all this? The menu's were different, you could not find the zip code entry or even the dish type. When it loaded a few minutes earlier, the system did a software update. They made major changes to the setup menues and added several new options. I didnt care...my show was nearing the end and I had no TV. Panic was setting in as I struggled to keep a clean mouth (kids next door) but with the cost of this new contraption...no, it was not going to beat me, I would win or else...(side note, average time to erect old dish, find north, set and tune in was about ten minutes...we are nearing 45 minutes now and this piece of &^#)* still wont work. I had 18 or so combination's for the receiver to work through due to their timely software download. The instructions (which I left home as it was so easy to set up) told me to choose a two lnb oval dish for the carry out and it would work fine. With the new set up, I didn't have that choice. I had a few 3 lnb choices but none seemed to work. You were also given the option of a single switch or multi. After several combinations, I tried a 3 lnb multi switch 72.5% option and all of the sudden, data started to download. My new carry out unit designed for quick set up only took 1.5 hours...Damn now its bed time...

On the bright side, I unhooked several times and locked up the dome whenever we left and it was 30 seconds to tv time when we got back. How much hardship is one supposed to endure while 'roughing it'!

Its Friday morning and I made Lori watch tv with me for an hour or so...It was not going to beat me...no way...I have a strange twitch in my cheek again... Soon we off and the GPS was locked in on a Coffee place. This would make everything alright and it did. We enjoyed the sun and later found our friends from biking Bill and Barb. They invited us to the family lot for the afternoon. Walt saw the water and just walked straight out and started to swim. He fel better as it was pretty warm out. Bill and Barb followed us to the campground and we enjoyed a wonderful evening of talk, wine and a barbecue followedby a little more wine. We said our good byes and again made Lori stay up and watch tv. I was going to get my moneys worth!

Saturday was a lazy start. I had written in the Montana owners club forum about assisting a neighbor in the park with a hot water issue. Soon a couple wrote to aske where in Sequim we were at. They were in Diamond pont also and soon we were visiting and catching up on our activities since meeting in Oreagon a few weeks ago. Small world.

I called my brother Craig and was able to meet him and his son Jeff for lunch. Craig too followed us back to the RV and again, wine, talk barbecue (are you seeing a pattern) and some more wine. What a great visit and hope to have many more.

Well as I rose early to watch more tv, the reality of our festivities hit hard. My blood sugar went out of whack as expected and it was slow going for an hour or so as I got the levels back down. We putzed around and got all loaded up to head home. A very nice and quiet drive home but was there problems ahead? The westbound traffic headed away from the ocean was incredible. How could so many people pack into that area? I have to make a left across the hiway to get to our house and this may be a problem. As we approached the turn, there was a substantial break like the parting of the red sea! Across, around and a pro style backing job got us off the road quickly. What a great weekend, but not as we had planned. Talked to alot of people and enjoyed life.

Not A Rookie anymore…I think

My wife and I are celebrating our first year of the RV lifestyle in a 5th wheel. This last weekend on our way home from camping, we talked about all we have been through over the last year. I must admit, it was a daunting task to learn the lingo, perform the checks and be safe while still managing to enjoy ourselves. We have driven the Oregon coast and conquered the mountain passes of Oregon and Washington.

I still vividly remember leaving the lot of Tacoma RV never having towed a 5vr. The terror and chipped teeth from clenching as we rounded that first corner, to the look of terror when I saw stop and go traffic on the freeway. This soon gave way to cautious optimism as I learned how the trailer pulled. Then the dreaded driveway backing job. I was so nervous, I couldn’t even talk.

Soon we were getting pretty good at setup and take down. Times were getting better. I do remember thinking I had made an expensive mistake, going into a 5vr and why would people do this to themselves. Once set up though, life was good.

As time went on, minor problems arose. With the expert opinions of fellow MOC’ers (Montana Owners Club) I was able to work through the problems. It also helped a lot that our friends had a sob 5vr and had been there done that. My friend Loren was able to assist me in most situations.

I have learned a lot. My terror has given way to enjoyment. Obstacles in backing have given way to challenges. I now can get her in the driveway on one shot, and tight campsites do not cause me to break out in terror related sweats.

I now look forward to hooking up and hitting the road. I have no reservations on our route. I have learned that as long as big rigs go that way, I can go that way. I only need to plan a little more on the route. On our bike, we avoided gravel roads and that was about it. With the trailer, we have to watch for low bridges and narrow roads. I need to plan my stops a little more as in lunch and make sure we have a spot for the night.

We have learned a lot in our short time and feel we are now “sophmores’ at the RV scene. Thanks to the MOC for your insight and guidance when asking those ‘important’ questions. We look forward to many more adventures down the road. I just wanted to pass this on in case any rookies were feeling the same as they go through the wide range of emotions during that first yea

Catching up on past trips

We have been on the go for several weeks. I finally have a chance to catch up on our blog and get up to date.

Over Memorial day weekend, Lori and I went to Lincoln City for five days. We stayed atthe Premier Resort there. It is a beautiful and well kept park. It was a little difficult getting in our spot as it is a narrow street. Once in, set up went quickly and we settled in for a fun and relaxing weekend...sort of.

First thing Lori see's is a couple people in recliner lounge chairs. Now she is whining about how she has to have one. We had decided to take a drive and end up at the casino at Spirit Mountain. This translated into driving 90 miles to Wilsonville, only to see some real nice recliners on sale and soon we were off with two new chairs/ We stopped a the casino and had a good late lunch as well as played a little.

Back at camp, it was time to break out the new chairs and blend in with the other beautiful people. We kind of goofed off all weekend and nvere could get on the beach as there was so many people. Lori even found a new wine opener in the gift shop and had to down several bottles in order to practice with the new opener. Seemed to get harder as she got to bottle three and four!!!

It was a nice clear weekend, but windy and cool. It finally made it to 60 degrees as we left town. We made the trip back up 101 towards home. Not sure if it was just early or what but traffic is very light. A good time and we will definately stay here again.

Enjoying K M Resort at Ocean Mist

Right before vacation, Lori and I stopped by to learn more about K&M resorts. I had been looking at them for some Time and was interested as it gave us a RV park close to Cheney, WA. We can RV it and see Mark and Aunt Sandy and the kids from here.

As the RV bug has us in its grips, we decided to check out Ocean Mist RV park in Ocean City. It is only about 25 miles from home and will be a great weekend escape location, but close enough for work.

Lori wanted to invite her parents out for the weekend of relaxing, beach coming and goofing off. We all got to the park around 4:30 pm. I had driven through this park and was not overly impressed at first glance. I payed little attention to the layout. As we pulled in, I went to check in and the very nice lady in the office handed us our packet. She asked if we were going to set up the satellite dish and I told her we were. She then changed us from 140 to 110, advising some trees may get in the way. What a nice tip. When handed the map, the park now made sense. It was layed out as essentially two different parks. One on the road which is nice, but not very appealing. They then built a new section by the beach. This is where we got to stay. I was handed alot of flyers for the park and when asked for the .25 cents spiel about the place, was soon overloaded with activities and food choices. Didnt expect that.

We drove out to our site and quickly found it. It as all are back in sites, but very easy to get in. Soon we were set up and the hamburgers were grilling on the George Foreman. I finished setting up and set up the dish for tv. A shocking and disturbing feeling passed over me as I remembered the satellite box, but not the remote. I would be forced to endure the indignity of getting up out of my chair and manually changing channels on the box every time we wanted to watch something else! I took a deep breath as we are forced to watch standard definition TV while camping and now this...Is it time for a motel (with remote) or just pack up and go home! After several moments of reflection, I came up with a plan. Show Lori how to change the channels and "ask" her to change the channels. Ya that will work...in theory...after all. we are camping and sometimes a major hardship is a reality of "roughing it".

Grandpa and Grandma were enjoying themselves as usual. Onetime I caught Grandpa make a comment referring to the RV as "ours". He was quickly corrected and laughed at his phew paw. Saturday, we drove up to Seabrook for lunch. What a great view from the cafe. Then it was off to Aberdeen to watch "grandslam" Peyton in a must win T-ball game. It's always fun to watch the grandkids having fun. He is rather full of it when he puts on his game face!

Back to the RV and soon we finished making Spaghetti which had been simmering all day. I made a crock pot full of chicken wings and within minutes, we were picking our teeth and rubbing our stomachs. As in previous posts, food is not something we skimp on while roughing it in the RV.

Lori and I slept on the air bed in the couch. It is so comfortable, we sleep very well. Sunday, fathers day, we packed up and headed to the Quinault Casino for Sunday Brunch. Wow, was that some great grub. We were home by noon and withing an hour, the trailer was clean and ready for our next adventure. I think Grandma and Grandpa will eventually tone down the grin as they had while walking on the beach, playing with Walt and sharing great food with us. This RV life as bit us hard. It is so relaxing to find a little spot out of the way and just relax.

Oh, I forgot to mention, We pulled up and I was able to back the truck and trailer into the driveway on the first try. I was so impressed with myself. I looked around and only Walt saw me...he didnt seem impressed!!!

Vacation 2009

Greetings from somewhat sunny southern Oregon. Lori, Walt and I are having a great time so far. Things got off to a shaky start the other night (Thursday) when we found tornado like conditions just south of Longview. We missed the real bad weather, but found 30mph winds and heavy rain for over 30 miles. It was not a fun time, but the wind was on our tail so we got great gas mileage.

We finally made it to Woodburn RV park at about 10:30. I left the trailer hooked to the truck, dropped the front jacks and hooked up water and cable (Cant go without TV). Soon we were asleep and slept real well. I woke up once to steady rain, but the sounds seemed to make us sleep better. Friday morning, we had a great breakfast of french toast and soon were on the road again. It poured from Salem south quite a waqys, but we did fine. Around 1 pm, we decided to stop for lunch. This is no easy feat with a trailer. We stopped at a nice little cafe and was able to get and parked with minimal backing. I was pretty proud of myself as I continue to learn more and more about how the trailer handles.

We arrived in Canyonville about 3:30 and as we were checking in, a lady walked up and handed us our MOC rally ID tags, book and info packet, greeting us and welcoming us to the rally. We thought this was quite the feat until she told us we were one of two Mountaineers at the rally and the other one was already here! Oh well. What a beautiful park. I almost felt we should not be here as we were a little out of our trailer trash element!!!. Soon people were introducing themselves and making us feel at home. We have done a few activities, but are enjoying being on vacation more that being at a rally.

Saturday am, I woke up first and let Lori sleep. She had set out Cinnamon rolls the night before and I baked them filing the trailer with cinnamon smells. Soon she was awake and with a good cup of coffee, we were talking about how rough it is to be warm, dry, and have great food all at our fingertips.

We goofed off for awhile and later caught the shuttle to the casino. Very nice place and pretty big inside. We had some lunch and I hit the blackjack table only to die a slow death. Frustrated, I took the few dollars left and we walked around. There were only a couple people playing craps, but they seemed to be doing well. Soon I was playing and a seven was rarely seen. Lori got in on the action and when this one guy started rolling the dice things got interesting. He went on a 45 minute plus roll and some guys made over a thousand dollars in that short period of time. Lori and I made pretty good money (enough to pay for all our RV sites for the week)...life is good.

We came back to the RV park and bragged alot. I keep telling Lori I could double our money with one bet, but she wont budge...anyway, good times when your winning.

Today, we headed for Medford and area for a nice day trip. We were headed for Harry and Davids. This was supposed to be a place where you can tour the facility and see how stuff is made. We got there to find a store and nursery. I was not a happy camper driving 80 miles for a damn store. Lori twitched and took off running screaming like a little girl...it is getting close for the home!.

We left town and headed on back roads heading towards Grants pass. Just outside Medford, we came across Jackson, OR. A town locked in the 19th century, old shops, people dressed in period costumes and lots to see greeted us. What an unexpected nice find. On up the road, we saw some beautiful scenery and hit a couple vineyards for wine tasting. It was a fun day and to top it off, we had put chicken in the crock pot when we left and had dinner waiting. Are you catching on about what makes a great vacation for us...wine and food and then some more food.

Tomorrow, we head north for a day trip to west of Eugene for a couple more vineyards, then back and start to break camp. We are leaving a day early in order to have an extra day in Spokane with Mark and Sandy.

Tuesday, we head for the Madras area, Wednesday to Tri Cities and Thursday into Ponderosa Falls RV outside Cheney. More later from the road.

Hi, We are back. Tuesday was another first for us and our RV. We had never pulled a mountain pass and I was looking forward to conquering another demon. As we hooked up the trailer, several people stopped by to say goodbye. It was fun and profitable to be here at seven Feathers this time.

We headed north and stopped for coffee. Walt didnt have a problem going right to sleep on his bed and slept most of the way across the pass. We hit the McKenzie Hiway and headed east. Soon the scenery was great and the truck was performing flawlessly. We got to the intersection by the McKenzie bridge and found the road was still closed due to snow. We headed north toward Santium pass and soon were pulling a good incline with a passing lane on our side. I was able to maintain 50 to 60 mph with little effort. Nice truck. Once at the top, a quick brake check and we were headed down. I turned on the engine brake and only needed to use the brakes a couple times. It worked very well coming down. Soon we were in Sisters and while gauking at the town, I missed my turn. rosie told me to make a left and I kept going straight. The reroute took us a long way out of the way and added quite a bit of time. I found a wide spot in the road and was able to make a U-turn with no problem. We turned and were back on track. Soon Rosie had us on back roads and when all seemed lost, we popped out on hwy 97. Soon we were setting up at the KOA in Madras, OR. looking at some very scary clouds. A few minutes later, a worker informed us of svere storm warnings and we locked down for the night. Most of the weather missed us but it rained all night and only stopped after we got soaked hooking up!

On the road up 97 to the interstae and then over to Tri Cities for the night. As we slumbered along the interstae with a good headwind, I checked mileage and found we were down to 8 miles to the gallon. Thats a head wind. Lori fell asleep and I quietly cleared Rosie of our intended route. As we exited the freeway in Pendleton, OR at the Wildhorse Casino, she awoke and I blamed her for the mix up. We got a nice spot in the RV park and off to the casino we went. Again, luck was on my side and we left winners. I love this RV park and Casino. Very well kept up and friendly staff.

It was off to A cross country trek and eventually hit hwy 395 which took us directly to Ponderosa Falls RV park in rural Cheney, WA. The person who assurred us he had made a reservation for us, didnt and although somewhat full, found us a spot. The clerk asked if I was OK backing up? I told her I was and we were off to our site. I pulled up and said to Lori that there was no way we were going to get in that spot. After calculations, conversing with neighbors and a deep breath, I backed down, into a pull through, turned around and then backed up the hill and was able to get right in the spot. Acted like I knew what I was doing!

We got set up and headed out for dinner with relatives who had also converged on Spokane. Mark, the oldest was getting his masters degree on Saturday and we were having a barbecue at his place after the graduation. It was a fast paced three days and soon it was time to say good bye and start for home.

We hit I 90 and traveled west to Lake Easton RV park for the night. The park was clean, but both the pool and hot tub were shut down, office closed shortly after we got there and trees prevented a satellite hookup. We watched a DVD and fell asleep early.

Monday, we hit the road. Not much conversation as we were headed home today. Soon we were backing in the driveway and the trailer was again clean and ready for our next adventure.

Tip Toe Through The Tulips

Every year, the Skagit valley of Washington is host to a colorful and enjoyable treat. It is Tulip Festival time in the valley. Lori and I hooked up the fifth wheel and headed north. I was not looking forward to Seattle traffic and we waited till the morning traffic slowed, giving us a better chance. We made it through with little traffic and soon were set up in a nice spot at the Burlington KOA. Only minus for this park is very narrow roads, making getting in and out very close. We did ok and soon Lori's folks were there. We got all set up and set out to tour the fields for a preview. Nothing but dirt! The cold spring has delayed the bloom by a couple weeks, but a couple fields were in bloom and we were happy.

We relaxed at the trailer Friday night and picked our teeth after a great dinner. I had the heat up a little and didnt sleep well as it was warm in the trailer. In the morning, we feasted on another great Lori breakfast and as we were cleaning up, Mel, Lori's brother called and came up to hang with us. He found the campsite and after we ate, we piled in the car and headed for the fields. We stopped at Tulip Town, walked around and enjoyed the flowers. Later, we returned to the trailer, had dinner and watched a movie.

Sunday morning, we loaded up and headed south. Traffic was alot heavier going south, but we did ok and had a nice drive home. I felt the area was way too tourist oriented and everything from parking to going to the fields cost money. At Tulip town, we had to pay to get in for the privilage of purchasing things inside. Weird! Anyway, still a great weekend.

Indy for a Week

Couple weeks ago, I was fortunate to get to Indianapolis, Indiana for a week to train on a new video forensics system we have. It was a very busy week and at times a little overwhelming. I flew out of Portland Sunday Morning and the flight to Minneapolis was relaxing. As we made the connecting flight to Indy, the plane backed away from the gate and stopped. The captain announced we had to wait as severe storms were rolling through. We sat for about an hour and finally got out.

Once in Indy, I got settled and after a few brief hours of sleep, I was on a bus and off to school. On Tuesday, we had a surprise visit by the current Miss America who hails from Indy. She came in and talked, posed for pics and just talked for awhile. She was interested in talking to trainees who were from foreign counties. We had six countries represented. If you look close at the picture, the guy in the blue shirt is me! I was a little behind in our project so I was hard at work.

The flight home was interesting. Several interesting people on the flight and on the final leg, alot of kids. I was pleasantly surprised that most were well behaved. It was a fast paced, hard, but very rewarding week. I came home with cases waiting for me to apply new technology (to our area).

More cabin Repairs

Hello again from the money pit,

We had a free weekend, so knowing the plumbing was busted, we decided to take advantage of the nice weather and again work on the cabin. I now know why dad Fretts hated the beach over time. I seem to always have a list of things to do. Last summer, the septic line went bad from roots. I had to dig and replace. This caused the toilet to have a few problems and with old floors and other sewer related problems. We then had to replace the roof, thanks to Shawn and his friend who supplied the labor. The final item on the list was to paint and finish the inside. We got all this accomplished by September, meaning yet another year of limited enjoyment.

With the hard winter, a tiny mistake in winterizing cost me 8 hours of work this weekend. I forgot to back drain the shower and yep, all the pipes dealing with the shower burst. With every cut, replace and glue job, another section would fail. Just cant win. They are all plastic but and easy to fix unless you are a medium husky type trying to bend just right to get under the house. I paid dearly saturday night with the pipes done with severe cramping in my stomach. Today, we pulled old stuff out that had been collecting and off to the dump it will go.

One thing I found was that due to last years water problem, the seal on the shower drain and toilet now leak. Now I will have to replace floors and drain seals. Not a major set back, but once again I get to miss the sunset while up to my elbows in *&#$.

The final blow to a very nice weather weekend was a serious motorcycle accident right at the corner by the rest area at Megler just past the Astoria bridge. The roadway was closed and we were told it would be hours before reopening. This is not a good sign when they completely close the hiway. My heart drops and although its sad to see a biker go down, you always hope its not someone from out M/C family.

Well, the upcoming week is Easter, birthdays and such. Then its off in the RV to Mount Vernon for the Tulip festival. More on that later.
Be safe

Shop till you drop

OK, sometimes what seems like a good idea just blows up in your face. This might have been one of those times. In a moment of weakness, I agreed to allow Lori the opportunity to again go to the outlet mall in Woodburn, OR. We had been trying to find a camping spot for the rare weekend of freedom we were facing. I called hoping the RV park would be booked, but no, they had plenty of room. I had to take four days vacation or lose it by the first of the month. I was happy to take a six day weekend to accomplish this.

We packed up and hitched the trailer. During my final walk around, I routinely pull the handle of the pull rite hitch to insure it is locked. To my surprise, it opened! I had to set the front jacks and re hitch the trailer. Again with all the weight on the trailer plate, I pulled and it again unhitched. I again re hitched and this time put a lock on the bar opening to prevent the hitch from opening. I called Tacoma Rv and they scratched their head as to why it would unlatch with weight on the hitch. I pulled ahead slightly and rechecked. It was good now. I locked it and manually checked it again to be sure. I later found, the latch keeper was just a little tight from weather. Some WD 40 solved the problem.

I was nervous for some time and it didn't get much better as we neared Portland. Construction brought traffic to stop and go right as you exit the bridge. We crawled through town without incident and after three hours, were pulling into the RV park.

Neither Lori or I were sure what we did wrong, but in no time, everything was set up and I was cooking dinner. It was clear but clod and a nice dinner was in order. A walk around the park after dinner and we settled in for the night. Walt was doing very well so far as we have a ramp now for him to enter and exit the truck. I am pretty sure, he was getting hurt almost every time he jumped down on his front legs.

How many of you have seen a cat start twitching and making weird sounds when they see a bird through the window? This was Lori as she looked across the fence at the stores. A sigh and she soon slumbered off to a restful sleep with visions of clothing stores galore as well as any other store she could find an excuse to go in. I layed there in a cold sweat wondering how expensive this weekend was going to be. You see, Lori is a champion shopper. She has felled some of the best. Most people only shop with her once. Some develop physical problems from the pace, others find that their minds go...never to be seen again.

Saturday morning is here. I always love camping in the trailer because Lori has coffee going and a great breakfast is in store. We always eat good. OK, it should read usually. Today, she tried out the George Foreman grill with the waffle attachment. Two quick waffles, a half cup of coffee and she was dancing at the door as if needing to go out and go potty like Walt.

The door opens and like a uncontrolled child, she sprints for the gate. I give her credit, she was full stride till she lost the sole of one shoe. Lori paused, looked at it and shrugged her shoulders, advising me that we will be looking for shoes now. Just kill me now!!!

Soon she was running in circles trying to figure out what store to go to first. I showed her a map and suggested the stores we were planning on purchasing items be last, so we would not have to carry alot with us. Okay that worked for a couple stores! Within half of the first of four sets of buildings, both hands were full of bags of apricot jellies to 'special' candy bars, to baby clothes. Oh God, I promise to be good if you just get me though this day! After a brief lighting bolt scare, we continued to another store.

The weather was cold, mixed rain and snow. Very cold outside, but very warm inside. This made for interesting stops in the stores. After we made the half way mark, a good Samaritan stopped and asked if we would like to use his truck to haul our stuff? Lori didn't hear the guy as she was turning to enter the factory outlet stores for shoe laces and insoles. Fascinating I must say, and amazing how she could spend so much time pondering corn pads.

After a few brief hours (nine) we were finishing up and had successfully perused all 100 plus stores, some many times. A few clerks knew her by name and would ask how the family was. I went through one pair of shoes and ya, you guessed it, she made me go to the Nike store and bought me another pair. I am not sure about these yellow and pink running shoes, but she said they were a really good price...I know, I will hit a couple mud puddles on the way back and they will be fine.

I forgot how much stuff we had purchased. As we walked back to the trailer, the wind and ran proved to us that winter was not done yet. We were soaked by the time we got back. I had to walk to the office to pay for our spot and then across the street for a Starbucks coffee. I forgot about the shoes, but as I entered the office, the clerk asked if me and my 'partner' were enjoying our stay? I said nothing and paid. Suddenly I didn't want coffee. My official story is that I was held up by gang members who took those 'fancy' shoes leaving me to walk home in my socks...

We had a nice dinner and the next morning was nice. Lori wanted to return for another pair of shoes...I told her I was too traumatized and put my old shoes on. She ran off for last minute shopping in case anything new came in in the last seven hours. Walt and I hooked up the trailer and I walked over and got coffee for the trip home. I found the garbage man had removed the yellow shoes from the dumpster...I pushed them behind and continued.

We had a nice drive home and all kidding aside, Lori and I had a great time. The nice thing about the RV is we are not held back by weather like we are on the bike. We have been able to go out during the off season and save the bike for spring and summer. A nice addition to our toy fleet.

Camping in Grayland

It was Valentines weekend, the skies were cool and overcast, but overall it was ok for February at the ocean. Loren and Gwen had planned to stay out here for the three day weekend . Terry and Jewell heard about the weekend and it turned out that the six of us took up three spots for the weekend.

We pulled in on Friday afternoon. I felt so out of place as it was just starting to get dark. I have got into a habit of getting to the campground after dark, so setup was alot easier when we could see. It was try out time for the new set of JT stabilizers on the trailer, so we were excited to see how much better they would work. Soon we were set up and it was time to get the satellite dish up so we can watch some tv. Nothing seemed to work for Loren and I. We tried several different things with no luck. We soon gave up and watched a DVD. A VU cube is looking better all the time!

We were greeted by off and on rain Saturday morning. I again tried the satellite setup with no luck. Other sites had their dishes set up and we could not get ours to work. I had a sat prep put in my trailer and wanted to use it. Not going to happen. I again gave up and we later went to westport and toured the city looking at old houses and checking the area out. Later, Terry and Jewell got there and we had a community pot luck. Loren and Gwen still like each other, so they snuck away for a romantic dinner for two and a Two and a half men marathon DVD.

Sunday, I went outside and was determined to get the TV working. I then had an epiphiny and switched a couple cables around on the dish. I then hooked the sat finder into the short cable and hooked the other end to the sat site on the trailer. I turned on the outside speakers so I could hear the beeps when I got close to finding (if) the signal. I got a couple beeps one time and then put the dish in the back of my truck. All of the sudden, I had lots of signal! I locked it down, switched the cable out and was soon enjoying tv. At least now I know what I need to do to find the signal.

I dont remember why, but something made my blood suger react and just before dinner, I got a real upset stomach. I went and took a walk and soon everything was better. We ate dinner and sat down to watch TV. Around 9pm, my phone rang and work needed me to respond as soon as possible. I told the fellow RVers, what was going on. All pitched in and took a part in order to get things ready to go. In about 15 minutes tops, We were hitched and pulling out of the campground. It was a white Knuckle run to Aberdeen, but soon we were home, a quick change and off for wht turned out to be four days with a little sleep here and there. Lori got the trailer cleared out and I finally got it parked I think the following Thursday.

The good thing is the JT's worked great. The bad was having to leave early and messing with the sat dish. We had great company and as usual, great camping. We stayed at Grayland Beach State park in space 17.

Finally our 5vr has a parking space

A couple weeks ago, we dropped off the Mountaineer at Tacoma RV for some minor warranty work. With the trailer gone, I thought, what a great time to build a parking pad. We had parked the trailer along side the house during the summer, but as the rains hit, I didn't want it sinking in the soft ground. We parked it on the pavement, but this made for an inconvenient parking situation.

The weather was going to pretty good, so I decided last Friday was the day to get forms and gravel. Off to Home Depot and after about $90.00 for treated 4x4's, I was ready to begin. Some squaring and staking and there it was, a 26' by 10' area ready for gravel. I called and they told me they would be out soon. I continued to prepare the sight and ask Lori to come take a look...why do I punish myself..."why dont you make it bigger" she asks? So instead of chasing her off with a shovel, I just set the forms out two more feet and get it ready just as the gravel arrives.

Now, I am tired and ready for the truck to dump it and with a small amount of raking, I am done..ya right.. The truck arrives and as I discuss with the driver about how the ground might be soft and I mention the fact that I'm not sure where the drain field starts, he refuses to drive onto the lawn. I understand and watch as he drops five yards of crushed rock in one spot for me to rack out. My muscles tell me this is stupid and then I think...Erv, my riding buddy, has a tractor. After a quick call, he is eager to head to the house and assist (must not have noticed the now steady rain!) Boy was I glad to see him. 5 yards is more than I thought. After an hour or so, the area was level and we were ready to try it out.I settled in for the evening to muscle spasms, back pain and joint lockups from all the exercise. Being bull headed, I refused advil and spent several hours during the night now too stoved up to get up and take some advil. Boy does the wife sleep sound. All the moans and groans only made her snore louder. I was able to crawl to the living room the next morning and hit the pain killers. We later headed to Tacoma to get the RV. We made a side trip to Loris folks to drop off firewood, take them to Costco and assist them spending some money on a new Plasma TV. Got it home and set them up and we were off. At Tacoma RV, the parts guy was in the middle of showing us how our new JT stablizer's worked and he stopped, looked and told us they had been installed wrong. He dashed off and returned with tools and within a half hour, we were off. I was getting nervous as I was very tired and it was getting dark. This would not be fun getting backed in as the driveway is dark and long. We made it home and I was right. After several tries, I was frustrated, worn out, but in the driveway. I left it on the pavement for the night and felt a fresh start to make the turn into the parking spot in the am.

This morning after a long and mostly painless night, I fired up the truck and with no cars to worry about, I could try a couple different angles and find a good line for backing into the new spot. With a couple adjustments, I was in the spot and my calculations for length worked very well. Don't tell Lori I said this, but the extra two feet worked well making the turn. I was in, set the new JT's and soon I was sitting inside watching the Superbowl Pregame show. Now we have a great spot and with a little more work, I will have power close and a walkway to and from the trailer. Now we don't have to worry about the weather (wind...trees...you know) and we have the

driveway back. Oh and by the way, even with only the front stablizers down, it is very noticeably stable. So far, it seems money well spent.
